Mix It Up!

I spend a lot of time encouraging clients to trust their instincts and be true to their own style...even if it's not true to one singular style.  I tell them, "If you love something, then we'll make it work!"

I know this is easier said than done sometimes.  The challenge might lie in combining the styles of two different people (maybe his style is a little more industrial than hers). Or it could be in blending the architecture of a traditional, historic home with functionality of a more contemporary chef's kitchen. Or  maybe you're struggling to find the perfect way to incorporate a few family heirlooms into a more modern urban home.

Well, you know that moment when you come across something that is exactly what you've been looking for? That moment when you actually say out loud, "That's it!" even though nobody else is in the room...?

When reading the November issue of House Beautiful I had that moment! There is was...a picture of a room that artfully mixes traditional with contemporary, light with dark, one wood tone with another, new with old.  So, today I'm sharing that moment with you.

I have to thank House Beautiful for featuring this incredible home (the rest of the Nashville residence is just as gorgeous) designed by the brilliant Markham Roberts.  The traditional slipper chairs and tufted velvet sofa mix perfectly with the modern white lacquer coffee table and oversized tone on tone photograph. (Yes, that is a photograph by Eric Cahan...stunning, right?!) Say nothing of the antique chest of drawers, intensely blue lamps, Stark sisal rug, and the incredibly inviting combination of fabrics.

It's perfect!  And it's an incredible example of mixing styles, layering colors, and playing with textures to create a room that is inviting and unique and true to the homeowners' style, even if it's not exactly true to any other particular style.  For them, it's exactly what it should be...home!

So, what makes your home uniquely you?

This is beautiful! I just moved into an apartment and my boyfriend's style is more classic where I like more modern interior design. We are trying to find the right balance that both of us like!

Good luck finding that balance! Enjoy the process! You can learn a lot about someone by better understanding why they like the things they like. :)
